Home - Austria ArticlesArt Exhibits & Museum HighlightsVienna Museum Liechtenstein On 28 March 2004 the Liechtenstein Museum opened in Vienna with world-class art treasures. Only a few times in the past 60 years have significant parts of the art collections of the Princes of Liechtenstein been presented in special exhibitions. The most important of these presentations - in 1985 at the Metropolitan Museum in New York - attracted great interest, not only in the United States. Describing the wealth of valuable objects, the newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine, for example, spoke of a "full-blown sensation". Museums Quarter The Museum Quarter is Vienna’s new art quarter. Several museums, including the Leopold Museum (featuring the world’s largest Schiele collection), the Museum of Modern Art Foundation Ludwig Vienna, and the Kunsthalle Wien will find a new home in this art complex. Vienna Museum of Fine Arts Austria’s largest Fine Arts Museum with the largest collection of works by Peter Bruegel the Elder, as well as famous works by Duerer, Titian, Tintoretto, Rubens, Raffael and Rembrandt. Open daily except Mondays, 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, Thursday’s till 9:00 pm Imperial Treasury The collection of the Vienna Hofburg Palace is one of the most important treasuries in the world. Top exhibits include the crown of the Holy Roman Empire as well as the Vestments of the Order of the Golden Fleece. Other highlights include precious jewelry and coronation robes, religious vestments and liturgical showpieces. Open daily except Tuesday 10:00 am to 6:00 pm Schoenbrunn Palace Austria’s most visited site and former summer residence of the Habsburgs. This magnificent baroque palace with its lavish gardens is a must-see stop. April – October open daily 8:30 am to 5:00 pm November – March open daily 8:30 am to 4:30 pm Austrian Gallery at Belvedere Palace The Austrian Gallery owns the largest collection of paintings by Gustav Klimt as well as impressive collections of works by Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka. April to late October open daily except Monday 10:00 am to 6:00 pm Late October – March open daily except Monday 10:00 am to 5:00 pm KunstHausWien Colorful, Fantastic, Creative: The Kunsthaus Wien is an unusual museum founded and created by Friedensreich Hundertwasser with colorful tiles, wells, trees in window niches and uneven floors. The KunsHausWien exhibits works by the recently deceased founder as well as diverse exhibitions of international contemporary artists. Daily 10:00 am to 7:00 pm -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lower Austria Melk Abbey This Benedictine Abbey was founded in 1089 and is a major representation of Austrian Baroque architecture. Melk Abbey is overlooking the Danube River and can easily be visited during any Wachau Valley excursions. Open Mid April to Mid November -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Graz Graz Armory Since 1551 all kinds of weapons, art and armor have been collected here. The result is the largest and best preserved historical weapons collection in the world with more than 30.000 pieces from late medieval times to the beginning of the 19th century. March – October open daily except Monday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Salzburg Hohensalzburg Fortress The largest completely preserved castle in central Europe dates back to the 11th century. Several exhibits and museums are housed in this impressive structure. Open year-round -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tirol – Innsbruck Ambras Palace Museum of Fine Arts Armory: Tournament harness, chamber or art and miracles and a portrait gallery on the history of Austria from 1400 – 1800. Castle Ambras is located just outside of Innsbruck. April to October open daily except Tuesday from 10.00am to 5.00pm. Winter hours from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm Swarovski Crystal Worlds Designed by Austrian artist Andre Heller, the Crystal Worlds are a showcase of glass art brought to the world by the Svarovski Crystal factory. Located in Wattens, outside Innsbruck. Open daily 9:00 am to 6:00 pm (closed from November 6-17 as well as Christmas and New Years) |
