Location - Campo Grande, the capital of the Mato Grosso do Sul State, is located in the central-western region of Brazil. About Campo Grande: Many tourists who go to and return from La Paz( Bolivia), and Machu Pichu(Peru) have to cross Campo Grande, the capital of Mato Grosso do Sul, on their ways. Campo Grande is a modern city. It has long avenues, a great deal of hotels, good commerce and business infrastructure. At the same time, the regional culture is to be easily perceived in typical food restaurants and local craft shops. It is a flat city, with tree-lined streets and avenues, population that largely consists of migrants from various parts of Brazil, as well as from Japan, Arabia, Paraguay and Bolivia. A few decades ago, when the government stimulated the occupation of the Brazilian central area, the city saw its economic boom. There´s Dom Bosco Museum to be visited in Campo Grande. It is one of the most complete museums of natural history and native culture in Brazil. Also known as Indian Museum, it makes a part of Dom Bosco Catholic University (in Portuguese, Universidade Católica Dom Bosco - UCDB); the UCDB is maintained by the Salesian Mission. It was the first center of higher education in the State. Situated on Rua 14 de Julho, the city's main street, the Dom Bosco Museum exhibits different objects belonging to the Indian tribes such as Bororo, Xavante, Carajá and Terena, that used to inhabit the region many centuries ago. The collection being gathered by the priests of the Salesian Order. The Parque Indigena is a central park with running tracks, lakes,restaurants and an "acoustic shell"; the Solar do Baís, or Pensão Pimentel, is one of the capital's historical features, with neo-classical facades and iron fanlights over the doors. The city's first building, the Pensão Pimentel was constructed near the North-West Railway road and was a hotel from 1938 to 1979 before being registered and restored. Nowadays it is a cultural center and tourist bureau with a bar and a restaurant on its premises where some of the typical to the region dishes are served. |
