The Pan de Azúcar National Park has a surface area of 43,769 hectares (96,291 acres), 21% of which lies in the Antofagasta region. It is characterized by its abundance of flora and fauna, and its Humboldt penguin colony on Pan de Azúcar island. It is also an area of great archeological and historical richness. Location Atacama Region, 194 km (122 mi) north of Copiapó. 30 km (19 MI) to the south of Chañaral. Location How to get there 1) Santiago-Copiapó: by air and public or private transportation. From Copiapó take the Panamericana highway towards Chañaral, passing Caldera. Once in Chañaral, take the road which leads to the airport but which also arrives at the park. 2) Santiago-El Salvador: by air, or public or private transportation. Leave El Salvador and take the westward road passing Diego de Almagro, after approximately 117 km (73 MI) you will arrive at a crossroads with the Panamericana, turn at this point heading north until you see a turn on the left which leads to the park. Activities Section Climate The climate is Mediterranean, but affected also by its proximity to the sea and the influence of coastal fog. The summer is very hot and the average annual temperature hovers around 13.8°C (57°F). There is rain in the winter months, and it is common to see the highest peaks covered in snow.
