MUSEUMS OF ECUADOR

Most of the museums are located in the historical district, otherwise known as old town or La Marín. The town museum, or "Museo de la Ciudad" opened in August 1998 and is the most modern and the most spectacular among Quito's museums. It is a massive place and has many different exhibitions dating from early pre-colombian cultures to recent development. The museum also maintains a multimedia section. Colonial Art Museum (Museo Arte Colonial)

You will find this museum in central Quito, in a colinial house which was built in the 16th century. The museum has been up and running since 1938 and holds a private collection and is collecting more and more all the time.

Museum and Library Aurelio Espinoza Pólit

The establishment was founded in 1929 by the Ecuadorian humanitarian Aurelio Espinosa Pólit S.J. This place is one of the most complete investigation centers in Ecuador. The museum includes a library with archives regarding Ecuadorian authors, issues and publications, a museum of art with nation historical items and relics, and an herbal greehouse.

Ecuadorian Museum of Natural Science (Museo Ecuatoriano de Ciencias Naturales)

This museum presents paleontological exibitions collected during expeditions in Ecuador. In particular the skeleton of a megaterid found in San José (Manabí Province), mastodon and rodents. Also mollusks, otoliths and foraminifers collected in the pliocene marine sections of Manabí Province are exibited.

Military Museum "House of Treaties"

Upon entering, you’ll find a fine 1929 monument of the Great Mariscal Antonio José de Sucre to comemmorate the centenial of his victory at the fort of Tarqui. This museum's main purpose is to honor the extraordinary military events, upon defending Ecuadorian territory over the decades.

This museum acts as a shrine to General Eloy Alfaro, who was a man who fought for his ideas of liberty and progress of the Republic of Ecuador. Exhibits include personal items and other important memorabilia.

In this museum you will find colonial artifacts and other things of interest which date back to the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.
