Chalkidiki

Chalkidiki is situated between the Thermaikos and Strymonikos Gulf and forms the peninsula of Macedonia. Chalkidiki is divided in three peninsulas or legs, the peninsula of Kassandra, the peninsula of Sythonia and the peninsula of Agio Oros.

Its name comes from the inhabitants of Halkida, in Evia, who founded many colonies in Chalkidiki. It covers 2,915 square kilometers of land and a coastline of 850 kilometers and its population is 80,000 people. The most famous mountains are Holomontas, 1,165m, Hortiatis, 1,201m and Stratonikos 913m.

The area that is fit for cultivation is 350,000 and grains, olive trees and tobacco thrive there. The inhabitants are occupied with agriculture, vine-yards, olive-crop, cattle breeding, honey making and fishing.

Chalkidiki is the most authentic Macedonian city of north Greece, a point of view that is reinforced by its dynamic presence in the historical development of Greece, with evidence from the ancient times, the Turkish domination and the Byzantine Empire.

Chalkidiki is famous for its mineral wealth, known since the ancient times with ores of manganese, iron, copper, iron pyrite and bauxite and its healing springs. The springs that stand out are Agia Paraskevi and Agii Apostoli. The cave of Petralona, an internationally known cave, is a worth visiting place.

In the greater area, there are many archaeological sites with important findings and exhibits. The areas that stand out are Akanthos, Apollonia, Afytos, Kallithea, Mendi, Olynthos, Sanny and Toroni. Archaeological museums are located in Thessaloniki, Olynthos and Polygyros.

The busiest beaches of the area are Agios Ioannis, Agios Mammas, Afytos, Glarokambos, Kera Maria, Kryopygi, Mola Kalyva, Pefkohori, Dristinikas, Furka, Porto Kufo, Ierissos, Kallithea, N. Marmaras, Olympiada, Uranoupoli, Polychrono, Poseidi and Chanioti.
