Thracians inhabited Thassos, around 1000 B.C. and later Ionians. In 340 B.C. Philipus the Macedonian occupied the island. Later Thassos became part of the Eastern Empire. In 1354, Ioannes Palaeologus the Fifth, ceded Thassos to his ally Francisco Gateluso of Genova and the Gateluso family remained in power until 1455 when turks invaded the island.

During balkan wars of 1912, the Greek army liberated the island, after 6 centuries of barbaric occupation.
