Almshouses

From the middle of the 14th century to the end of the 18th century rich burghers and foundations had small houses built. These consisted of one room only and a tiny kitchen, a bathroom and an attic.

WITH A DIFFERENCE

These small houses used to be built around a garden or courtyard. That is to say, in most Dutch towns. In Utrecht they were built with a difference. The Utrecht almshouses are terrace houses and do not have a central courtyard.

HERITAGE-LISTED

In the old days poor, mainly old, people and sometimes laborers lived in the almshouses. Foundations financed most of these complexes. Nowadays the occupants are private individuals and most of the almshouses our heritage-listed. In the past ten years many almshouses were restored and renovated completely.

ALMSHOUSES WALK

Are you interested in a trip back in time? We recommend the walk along the Utrecht almshouses. The route description is available from the local tourist information office. The duration of the walk is approximately 1.5 hours, depending on your tempo. We kindly request you to respect the privacy of the occupants of the almshouses.
