Beck Isle Museum of Rural Life

An extensive museum containing a magnificent collection of objects covering the last 200 years with something for all the family. The collection aims to reflect local life and customs and to trace many of the developments in social and domestic life over the period and includes an extensive display of photographs from the Sydney Smith collection distributed throughout the museum.

Bolton Abbey

The Yorkshire home of the Duke & Duchess of Devonshire. This popular Yorkshire estate provides over 80 miles of footpaths through some of the most spectacular scenery in England giving inspiration to famous artists like Turner and Landseer, and poets such as Wordsworth.

Bolton Castle

Bolton Castle is a massive fortress with walls 9 feet thick which has been dominating Wensleydale since 1379. Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned here during 1568 and 1569 and the Royalists were besieged here during the Civil War.

Captain Cook Memorial Museum

Handsome 17th century harbourside house where the great explorer, James Cook, came to serve his apprenticeship in 1746 - now a museum. The rich collection includes period rooms - furnished as Cook knew them - and ship models, maps and manuscripts, artefacts from the voyages, and many fine original paintings, drawings and prints.

Captain Cook Schoolroom Museum

Housed in what was once the school, in which Captain James Cook was educated, the museum has displays about Cook’s early life and later achievements.

Constable Burton Hall Gardens

Constable Burton Hall Gardens is a terraced woodland garden of lilies, ferns, hardy shrubs, roses and wild flowers attached to a beautiful palladian house designed by John Carr (house not open).

Situated close to the railway station and York town centre, Bar Convent is open from 10.00am to 5.00pm, with guided museum tours weekdays at 10.30am and 2.30pm.

Whitby Abbey
