Abbot House - Dunfermline Heritage Trust

Abbot House, once the administrative headquarters of the first and finest Benedictine abbey in Scotland, is the jewel in Dunfermline’s heritage crown.

Andrew Carnegie Birthplace Museum

Visit the birthplace of the weavers son who became ‘King-Steel’ in America, the worlds richest man who turned philanthropist. Weaving demonstrations on first Friday of the month from May.

Angus Folk Museum

Housing one of Scotland’s finest folk collections, this museum presents a vivid insight into how the rural workforce used to live. Six charming 18th century cottages contain the domestic section, and the agricultural collection is in the farm steading opposite, illustrating changes in the Angus countryside over the last 200 years.

Barry Mill

This 19th century meal mill works on a demonstration basis. Records show that a mill has occupied the site since at least 1539. The present building was rebuilt in 1814 following a fire.

Ben Lawers

Ben Lawers is Perthshire’s highest mountain at 1,214m (3,980 ft) with views from the Atlantic to the North Sea. In the Scottish National Trust’s care are 3,374 hectares of the southern slopes of the Lawers range and 1,348 hectares of the Tarmachan range, noted for a rich variety of mountain plants.

Blair Castle

Blair Castle has been home to the Atholl family for more than seven centuries and holds an important place in Scotland’s history. It has been a magnet to visitors for generations.

Buchlyvie Pottery Shop

Buchlyvie pottery shop is a working pottery in the beautiful village of Buchlyvie, set between the Trossachs near Loch Lomond and historic Sterling. We hand produce a wide range of porcelain goods including tableware, giftware, lighting and bespoke tile panels.

Culross Palace

This small royal burgh on the north shore of the Forth provides a striking introduction to Scottish domestic life in the 16th and 17th centuries. Culross was then a thriving community, developed under the businesslike laird, Sir George Bruce, with a flourishing trade with other Forth ports and the Low Countries.

Falkland Palace

The Royal Palace of Falkland was the country residence of the Stuart kings and queens when they hunted deer and wild boar in the Fife forest. Mary, Queen of Scots spent some of the happiest days of her tragic life ’playing the country girl in the woods and parks’.

Glamis Castle

Glamis Castle is the family home of the Earls of Strathmore and has been a royal residence since 1372. It is the childhood home of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, the birthplace of Her Royal Highness the Princess Margaret, and the legendary setting of Shaekspeare’s play ‘Macbeth’.

House of Dun

The House of Dun is a Georgian house overlooking the Montrose Basin, designed and built by William Adam in 1730 for David Erskine, Lord Dun. The house contains royal momentos, examples of Lady Augusta’s woolwork and embroidery, and a family collection of portraits, furniture and porcelain.

Huntingtower Castle

Huntingtower is an unusual, well-preserved castle, consisting of three different phases of building: a 15th century keep, a nearby but not touching 16th century L-plan tower house, and a later small connecting range.

J.M. Barrie’s Birthplace

In this two-storey house J.M. Barrie (1860-1937) was born. The upper floor is furnished, as it may have been when Barrie lived there. The adjacent house, No 11, houses an exhibition - The Genius of J.M.

Kellie Castle and Garden

Kellie Castle is a fine example of the domestic architecture of Lowland Scotland. The oldest part is believed to date from 1360, but the building in its present form is mainly 16th and early 17th century.

Killiecrankie

On 27 July 1689, the Pass of Killiecrankie echoed with the sound of battle cries and gunfire when a Jacobite army led by ’Bonne Dundee’ defeated the government forces under General Hugh Mackay.

Kinnoull Tower

Near the summit of Kinnoull Hill is Kinnoull Tower, built by the 9th Earl of Kinnoull. Both Kinnoull Tower and nearby Binn Tower were built in the 18th century in imitation of the castles on the Rhine in Germany, as proud landmarks above the Tay, Scotland’s largest river.

Loch Leven Castle

Loch Leven Castle sits on an island on the western margin of Loch Leven. Interestingly, it is thought that the island was much smaller than its current size, possibly such that the waters of the loch lapped the castle walls.

Montrose Air Station Museum

Montrose airfield was the first operational airfield in Britain, setup by No. 2 Squadron, RFC in 1913. The museum is situated by the old airfield and hangers and houses in the original headquarters building.

National Wallace Monument

Towering over the River Forth, the National Wallace Monument stands in tribute to Sir William Wallace and his triumph over the English army at the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297.

Stirling Smith Art Gallery and Museum

Founded in 1874, the Stirling Smith gallery is the focus for the history and material culture of the Stirling area. Scottish history collections, fine art and archaeology are used in the main display called ’The Stirling Story’, which explores the history of the town over the past Millennium.

University of Dundee Botanic Gardens

Dundee has a fine modern Botanic Garden which caters well for visitors: its gentle south facing slopes are just above the banks of the River Tay. Founded in 1971, it can boast fine collections of conifers and broad-based leaved trees, good shrubs, tropical and temperate glasshouses, a water garden and a herb garden.
