Castle Semple Centre, Lochwinnoch, just 10 minutes from Glasgow Airport (A737) is open daily throughout the year for refreshments, walks and outdoor adventure activities plus boat and bike hire. Culcreuch Castle Culcreuch Castle, central Scotland’s oldest inhabited castle, is now open as an elegant country house hotel. Set in 1,600 acres of wooded parkland, the perfect base for touring the Trossachs and Highlands, where the legends of Braveheart and Rob Roy took root. Glasgow Cathedral Glasgow Cathedral, some 15 minutes walk from the city centre, is an impressive building, with a history that spans the development of the city itself. Glengoyne Distillery Glengoyne Distillery is often described as Scotland’s most beautiful distillery and is just a short drive from Glasgow on the scenic A81. Close to the Trossaches and Loch Lomond, Glengoyne is open all year for guided tours, whisky tastings, private dining and the whisky shop. Heatherbank Museum of Social Work The museum, founded in 1975, is the only Museum of Social Work in Europe. It aims to increase public awareness of the social welfare needs of society, particularly those who are marginalised. Holmwood House Alexander ’Greek’ Thomson has described Holmwood House as the finest domestic design. It was built in 1857-8 for James Couper who, with his brother Robert, owned Millholm Paper Mills on the banks of the River Cart, below the house. Lochwinnoch RSPB Nature Reserve Lochwinnoch RSPB Nature Reserve is ideal for all the family, as the trails and hides are all easily accessible. The shop specialises in optics, books and wild bird care products. Free entry for all in the centre which features a ground-level viewing area. Paisley Abbey In 1163 a community of Cluniac monks set up a monastery near St Mirin’s shrine. This monastery later became Paisley Abbey and was rebuilt and restored in the 14th century. Pollok House The Maxwell family has lived at Pollok House since the mid-13th century. Three earlier castles were replaced by the present house (c1740) after consultation with William Adam.
