Auchindrain Museum Auchindrain is an open air museum consisting of the substantially restored old township of that name along with related domestic and working life collections. Castle Tioram Castle Tioram - the ancestral home of the Macdonalds of Clanranald - is one of the foremost surviving examples of a 13th century castle in Scotland. The castle was the principal stronghold within the Lordship of Garmoran, which includes Moidart, Rum, Eigg, Canna, the Uists and Barra. Cawdor Castle Cawdor Castle, the most romantic castle in the Highlands, has a magical name linked with Macbeth by Shakespeare. The medieval tower and drawbridge are intact and generations of art lovers are responsible for the eclectic collections of paintings, tapestries, furniture and books in the castle. Dunrobin Castle Dunrobin Castle is the most northerly of Scotland’s great houses (approximately 50 miles north of Inverness) and is certainly one of the most majestic. Hugh Miller’s Cottage Here on the 10th October 1802, was born Hugh Miller, who became a stonemason, eminent geologist, editor and writer. The furnished thatched cottage, built circa 1698 by his great grandfather, contains an exhibition and captioned video programme on his life and work. Inverewe Garden This outstanding 20-hectare garden, part of an 890-hectare Highland estate, is impressively set on a peninsula on the shores of Loch Ewe. The warm currents of the North Atlantic Drift or Gulf Stream help to create an oasis of colour and fertility where exotic plants from many countries flourish on a latitude more northerly than Moscow, giving an almost continual display of colour throughout the year. Inverness Castle A castle was built here by Macbeth, which was destroyed by Malcolm Canmore in 1057. Today the site consists of a fortress built in 1835 to house the Sheriff’s Court and Police Department, a function it still performs today. Kilchurn Castle Kilchurn Castle is at the north-east end of Loch Awe, 2.5 miles west of Dalmally and off the A85. It consists of a square tower, built by Sir Colin Campbell of Glenorchy in about 1550. Lochailort Church Lochailort Church - or Our Lady of the Braes as it is known - appears in many scenes of the movie ’Breaking the Waves’. Sandwiched between the A830 and the Fort William to Mallaig railway line, it is also thought to be the inspiration for the church in ’Local Hero’, starring Burt Lancaster. The Dalmore The Dalmore has a distillery at Alness on the Cromarty Firth, with a visitors centre open for tours. Thurso Castle Visible across the rivermouth from the old town of Thurso are the roofless but impressive remains of Thurso Castle, built on the shore in 1878 by Sir Tollemache Sinclair. |
