Southern Scotland

Bowhill House & Country Park

Scottish borders home of the Duke of Buccleuch with a magnificent collection of paintings, furniture, silver porcelain and tapestries. There is a restored Victorian kitchen, James Hogg exhibition and small theatre.

Brodick Castle

The site of this ancient seat of the Dukes of Hamilton was a fortress even in Viking times. The 13th century fortified tower was developed in the 16th century and extended by Cromwell in the 17th century.

Cairnholy

Cairnholy, above Wigtown Bay near Dumfries, is the site of the remains of two impressive chambered cairns. Both have been heavily robbed, although the large stones forming the facade and chamber of Cairnholy I have been left, as have the portal and chamber stones of Cairnholy II.

Castle Kennedy Gardens

The Castle Kennedy Gardens, just five miles east of Stranraer and covering 75 acres, are world famous for rhododendrons, azaleas and embothriums. The landscaped gardens of terraces and avenues are laid out around a circular lily pond.

Robert Burns House

It was in this ordinary sandstone building that Robert Burns, Scotland’s national poet, spent the last years of his brilliant life. Now a place of pilgrimage for Burns enthusiasts from around the world, the house retains much of its eighteenth century character and contains many relics of the poet.

Souter Johnnie’s Cottage

This cottage was the home of John Davidson, village souter (shoemaker), who was the original Souter Johnnie of Robert Burns’ Tam o’ Shanter.

St. Abb’s Head

The sea below pounds the sheer 90m (300 ft) high cliffs of St. Abb’s Head, situated between farmland and the North Sea. Higher up the cliffs are the homes of colonies of guillemots, kittiwakes, razorbills, shags, fulmars, puffins and herring gulls, which nest on narrow ledges from April to August.

Threave Garden
